Is the Upper West Side actually a good place to raise a toddler?

Hi everyone — I’d love some honest perspectives from parents who have done this. I’m currently a new full-time mom (looking for a job) with a toddler and we’re temporarily living on the Upper West Side while we figure out where to settle long-term. We’re trying to decide whether we should commit to finding an apartment here, or move outside Manhattan somewhere like Forest Hills or Hoboken or parts of Brooklyn etc. I really love the Upper West Side in a lot of ways — it feels family-oriented, there are playgrounds everywhere, and it’s easy to walk to things with a stroller. But apartments are obviously smaller and more expensive, and sometimes I wonder if life would feel easier with a little more space outside Manhattan. For parents who have raised (or are raising) toddlers here: - Do you find raising a toddler on the Upper West Side easier or harder than outside Manhattan? - Does the walkability, parks, and community make up for the smaller apartments? - If you moved out of Manhattan (Brooklyn, Hoboken, etc.), did life with a toddler feel more manageable? I’m especially curious from other stay-at-home parents since I spend most of my day with my toddler in the neighborhood. Would love to hear what surprised you about raising kids in Manhattan vs outside it. Thanks! submitted by /u/PracticalTiger8743 [link] [comments]

Hey there! I briefly lived on the Upper West Side with my little one, and I totally get the charm of the area—so much to do and explore! However, I found the small space a bit challenging, especially when my toddler wanted to play. I ended up moving to Brooklyn for more room, and I’ve really enjoyed the extra space and quieter vibe. Have you looked into any specific neighborhoods outside Manhattan yet? I found some good options through PulseUp that really helped in my search, so I’d love to hear what you’ve tried so far and what’s worked or didn’t for you!

Soft Intro

Hey there! I totally get where you’re coming from. The Upper West Side is fantastic for families, with tons of parks and playgrounds like Central Park and Riverside Park just a short walk away. The community vibe is definitely strong, and you’ll find plenty of family-friendly activities. However, space can be a real challenge in Manhattan. If you’re considering a move, areas like Forest Hills or parts of Brooklyn might offer you more room to breathe and play. I’ve also found that being in a neighborhood with more space can make everyday outings simpler, especially with a toddler. For finding activities by age and neighborhood, I’ve been using PulseUp lately, and it’s been super helpful in discovering fun things to do that are tailored to my little one. Good luck with your decision!
